UNACHI Students Learn About the Environmental Management of Our Project

With the aim of strengthening knowledge sharing and introducing young people to environmental management and conservation initiatives, members of the Ecological Volunteer Group at the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (UNACHI) visited the site where the Puerto Barú in David project will be built.

During the visit, students learned about the environmental actions and programs being implemented as part of the project, as well as the criteria and measures established for the responsible management of natural resources.

For members of the Ecological Volunteer Group, seeing the actions being carried out in the field firsthand represents an opportunity to expand their knowledge and understand how development projects can incorporate environmental protection measures.

Taylor Gabis, a UNACHI student and member of the Ecological Volunteer Group, highlighted that the visit provided an opportunity to learn about the project firsthand, understand its potential impact on the community, and learn about the measures being considered to protect the natural environment.

“As young people, we always want our forests and the animals that inhabit them to be protected and remain unharmed. That is why I find it very interesting to be able to come here, listen, learn more about the project, and understand how work is being done to ensure that development also takes our green spaces and the environment into account,” she said.

Carlos Somoza, Community Affairs Manager at Puerto Barú, noted that engaging with students and youth organizations is important for creating opportunities to share information and foster dialogue about the project’s environmental component.

The visit is part of ongoing efforts to maintain opportunities for engagement with different sectors of the community, promoting firsthand knowledge of the environmental initiatives being carried out at Puerto Barú in David.
