Puerto Barú in David Respectfully Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling Declaring the Category III Environmental Impact Assessment Legal

David, Chiriquí. October 26, 2026. Puerto Barú in David respectfully welcomes the decision of the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which declared Resolution DEIA-IA-0003-2024, dated January 16, 2024, NOT ILLEGAL, through which the Ministry of Environment approved the project’s Category III Environmental Impact Assessment.

In its ruling, the Court concluded that the plaintiffs had failed to substantiate the alleged legal violations and acknowledged, based on the evidence examined during the proceedings, that there is no overlap between the project and the mangrove area.

“Chiriquí will have its port,” said Ismael González, General Director of Puerto Barú in David. González added: “We receive this decision with respect and responsibility. We have always trusted Panama’s institutions. Our commitment now is to continue working with the same rigor, fulfilling our environmental obligations and contributing to new development opportunities for Chiriquí and the country’s Western Region.”

Puerto Barú in David represents an estimated private investment of approximately US$250 million and aims to strengthen the logistics infrastructure of the Western Region, expand its connectivity with international markets, and create new opportunities for producers, businesses, and communities.

The project will continue to move forward in accordance with the applicable legal and environmental framework and the provisions established by the competent authorities.
